Why Not Join Michael for one of his enjoyable & famous walks?

Witty Walks have shown the above to be true over the past seventeen years with anything from a dozen to over fifty friends among the English speaking community walking and talking their way across the Catalan countryside within easy reach of Barcelona.

Over the years the walks have taken us as high as 3000 metres to the Puigmal in the eastern Pyrenees, along the umbrella pine-clad cliff tops and calas of the Costa Brava, a splash and swim through the gorges of the Parrisal south near Tortosa, strolls in the peaceful quiet of the Colsacabra with its table-top hills and alpine flowering meadows, streams and waterfalls, scrambles around the twin-toothed 2400-metre Pedraforca, and, nearer to Barcelona, wandering among the crags of Montserrat, and Sant Lorenç de Munt, the vineyards and lesser-known hills of the Penedés, and, to Montseny again and again, always a favourite.

Next Walk

Despite short notice and regrettably clashing with flower walk and St George's retreat, for anyone who is not already down for these, here are minimum details next walk as we have done this a few times before.

Walk 26th May Saturday

Meeting place Col de Bracons 10 o`clock.

How to get there take the autopista direction Girona/La Junquera/France.
Take second exit after toll direction Vic/Puigcerda.
Continue on this past Vic signs showing Ripoll
Take exit to Tiunel Bracons/Olot.
Emerging other side of tunnel find directions to Joanetes, about 5-10 mins away where recommend take coffee before heading for Col Bracons which of course is on top of the  tunnel!. Including break for coffees it should not take more than about an hour and a quarter.

The Walk is from the Col Bracons (1130m alt)starting up a very small and perfectly harmless cliff, barely a minute and we are up on flat alpine turf, thence a steady winding rocky path leading up to a dividing of the ways (20mins) for two options to choose from before tackling the ascent of the Puigsacalm:- one to continue on the now flat path until a gate where we take a path leading right through the beech woods on the northern slopes of the Puig Tossal (1456m alt) - Puigsacalm  (1514m) ridge to the Font Tornadissa (1340m 30-40 mins), then up an alpine slope on to the ridge where we join the second group who have taken the second option! This is a direct route to the Puig Tossal, a fairly strenuous scramble up a sharpish ridge, airy and somewhat exposed (30-45 mins including breather at the top)'but well protected by roots to cling on to and the odd branch or tree, and from there an easy stroll about 40 minutes along the ridge, with  magnificent views north to the Pyreenees and south to the Colsacabra, to join the first group, a good place to rest before the last stretch to the top of the Puigsacalm (20 mins)..

Hopefully we shall have a clear day but weather can change abruptly so bring a wind-proof light anorak and sweater.

Bring your own picnics, and don't forget sun cream, good walking boots or well cushioned and non-slip soled trainers. Hat and and treking sticks recommended.

For those who were on Mke Thom's marvellous climb up the Matagalss, I would reckon this walk is about half the time and effort!, but with similar spectacular views. Many thanks Mike and Andrew, Matthew, and Grace for a super day. Thank you, John and Sandra, for the album of photos which I shall send on later..

The following walk on the 16th June will be a splash and a wade  upstream from San Pere de Torello to some pools below Vidrá. Again a picnic but with the option of carrying on from  the waterfalls and pools picnic spot to Vidrá about another 45 mins for a meal there, or up to the bar at Bellmunt (abt an hour) from where it is about  40 mins down to S Pere Torelló.. Normally we would return the same way this time downstream..  Total walking time there and back 4-5 hours. Details later.

Cheers
