The Hanslope Trophy 2010

The event on Thursday combined the Sant Jordi Event with the annual competition for the Hanslope Trophy. The superlative little statue presented for Competition by the Hanslope Park Golf Society all those years ago was in the waiting. This little chap has been on both sides of the continent over the years and it was fitting that this year we had a match competed over two electrifying days of competition (particularly on Friday) with passion and desire shown by all the team members. The Sant Jordi Team over the two days (some players were loaned to the HPGS): Graham Nash (Captain), Derek Simes, , Michael Robson, Roger Hunger, Marc Cox, Juan Maestro, David English, Geoff Brown, Simon Gordon, Richard Rose, Jonathan Goodman, Rhodri James, Kevin Ellis, Juan Sanllehy, Roy Waters, Thomas Maestro, David Collinson, Ian Robertson, David English, Mark Mills & Wolfgang Finkbeiner. The Hanslope Park Golf Society was represented by: Trevor Haigh (Captain), Alistair Rowton, Phil Canale, Bob Gordon, Mark Hammond, Roy Coombs & John Bennett.
The match was very close after the first day with just one point separating the teams, 21 points to Hanslope Park G.S. and 22 for The Sant Jordi G.S. so with 10 head to head matches of which there were 6 counting towards the final result. Those with direct Sant Jordi vs Hanslope members. Unfortunately, we lost Roy through injury halfway through day one with a Mosquito Allergy and John on Day one for ‘Pacharanitis’. We were all looking forward to the second day with excitement. On day one there were some heated moments, notably David English who suffered one of the worst of all incidents by having his 3 iron disintegrate during a shot (his verson not mine)—some might be looking for missing Hanslope players but all appeared on day two, some did have and bruises. Anyway David found the club head and after a few drops of Superglue it was in play again on the Friday. I followed the groups round on both days and took some 700 photos. All of these are now on the Gallery 2010 section of the web for you to see, copy and use as you wish. www.santjordigolf.com
Day two dawned slightly overcast and somewhat cooler, there was a threat of lightning later on but we all managed to finish and enjoy a really delicious BBQ lunch before departing for our respective destinations. There were some interesting moments and obvious nerves on the 1st tee for this important moment and it was interesting to see that of the 20 players competing about 14 or so ended up in the trees on the right hand side of the first fairway, one in the water and just 5 on the fairway. There were just a handful of pars and some big swings in the matches during the round. At the 9th hole Sant Jordi were up in half the matches, three were tied and Hanslope were up in two. Of those matches counting towards the final result, Sant Jordi won 4 and Hanslope took 2 leaving a final result of 26 to 23 in favour of Sant Jordi.
